Wheelchair accessible holiday villa in the Algarve

Your accessible home from home in the sun

We offer wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation for the disabled and can arrange wheelchair accessible transport for you too.

Our location in Alto do Relógio, just outside of Loulé, offers spectacularly stunning 180º views out and across a valley and towards the sea. It is a rural location, set on the edge of an ecological zone. Just a litte further down the road you will find a cafe/bar and small shop selling essentials. There is a large supermarket 2 minutes drive away offering anything you might need and open 7days a week. A few more minutes away is the market town of Loulé. This offers easy access to a daily indoor market, shops and restaurants.

Ourico do Mar is just 20 minutes from Faro Airport and wheelchair-accessible transfers are available.

The villa is light and spacious and has been carefully refurbished to provide quality accessible accommodation with 3 en-suite bedrooms, including 2 wheelchair-accessible bedrooms with en-suite wet-rooms and wheel-in showers. The property has a large private pool with hoist (heated to 25C May to October), and a wide range of specialist equipment including 2 electric profiling beds, pressure relieving mattresses, 2 mobile hoists, 2 self propelled shower chairs and tilting shower chair.

There is a spacious south-facing living/dining room which opens onto a large terrace with stunning views. The living area has comfortable seating with Smart TV and leads into the dining area with large wooden table and seating for 6 (blocks can be provided to raise the height of the table). There is free 500Mbps fibre optic speed WIFI throughout. The villa has a modern fully-equipped kitchen also leading out onto the sun terrace with BBQ and outdoor dining furniture.

The master bedroom has 2 electric profiling beds with memory foam mattresses (including one with integrated bed-sides), and either bed can have a grab pole attached. There is a wheel-in wardrobe with dual-height hanging space, and a height-adjustable wheeled bed table. The master bedroom en-suite has a wheel-in shower with grab rail, wall-hung washbasin, WC with grab rails either side (one retractable), and lever-style taps.

The second accessible bedroom has 2 single beds (height 55cm), wheel-in wardrobe, and en-suite bathroom with wheel-in shower with grab rail, wall-hung washbasin, WC with retractable grab rail on the right and static to the left, and lever-style taps. The third bedroom, non accessible, is up a few steps, and has 2 single beds with space for a fold-up bed if a 7th guest is required. The en-suite bathroom has a shower over bath, WC, and washbasin.

We have beautiful outdoor spaces, including a large terrace leading off the living area and kitchen, and a large south-facing pool area accessible by a large lift. The pool and surrounding terrace have breathtaking views across the valley, and there is a hydraulic pool hoist with seat or sling an option that is much better for any disability causing upper body balance issues. Guests can enjoy sunbeds (including one with larger wheels and thicker mattress) and a pool-side room with fridge.

About Us

Simon and Denise Raines created Ourico do Mar after Simon was paralyzed from the neck down (C4 tetraplegic/quadriplegic) following an accident while playing rugby at the age of 18.  Denise worked on the spinal unit where Simon was treated and after getting married the two decided to move to Portugal in 2001.  Their goal was to create an idyllic holiday destination where people with a disability including their family & friends could come to relax and enjoy.
After 22 exciting years, Denise & Simon have now handed the torch over to new owners Charlotte and Glen who have fallen in love with Ourico do Mar.  Charlotte speaks 5 languages (EN,FR,NL,DE,ESP) and her vast experience as a registered home nurse gives guests the peace of mind and warm welcome they would come to expect at Ourico do Mar.
