Wheelchair accessible holiday villa in the Algarve
Your accessible home from home in the sun
We offer wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation for people with disabilities and can also arrange wheelchair accessible transport for you.
We are located above Alto do Relógio, just outside Loulé, so we enjoy a spectacular 180º view over the valley to the sea. It is a rural location, located on the edge of an ecological zone. A little further on you will find a café/bar and small shop where you can buy essentials. There is a large supermarket 2 minutes drive away which offers everything you need and is open 7 days a week. A few minutes away is the market town of Loulé. This charming town offers you access to a daily covered market, shops and restaurants.
Ourico do Mar is just 20 minutes from Faro Airport and wheelchair accessible transfers are available.
The villa is light and spacious and has been carefully renovated to provide high quality accessible accommodation. There are 3 en-suite bedrooms, including 2 wheelchair-accessible bedrooms with an adjacent bathroom and walk-in showers. The property has a large private swimming pool (heated to 25C from May to October) with lift and a wide range of specialist equipment including 2 electric high-low beds, anti-decubitus mattresses, a patient lift, 2 shower chairs and a tilting shower chair.
There is a spacious, south-facing living/dining room that opens onto a large terrace with beautiful views. The living area has comfortable seating with a Smart TV and leads to the dining area with large wooden table and chairs for 6 (blocks can be supplied to increase the height of the table). There is free 500Mbps fiber optic WIFI throughout the villa. The villa has a modern, fully equipped kitchen which also opens onto the sun terrace with BBQ and garden furniture.
The master bedroom has 2 electrically adjustable beds with memory foam mattresses (including one with integrated bedsprings), and each bed can be fitted with a parrot perch. There is a wardrobe with a wheelchair-accessible height, and a height-adjustable table for the bed. The adjacent bathroom of the master bedroom has a shower with wheelchair access and support handle, a hanging sink, a toilet with support handles on both sides (one retractable) and lever taps.
The second accessible bedroom has 2 single beds (height 55cm), a wheelchair-accessible wardrobe, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower with wheelchair access and support handle, a hanging sink, a toilet with retractable support handle on the right and a fixed support handle on the left, and lever taps.
The third bedroom, non-accessible, is up a few steps and has 2 single beds with space for a folding bed if there is a 7th guest. The en-suite bathroom has a shower over the bath, a toilet and a sink.
We have beautiful outdoor areas, including a large terrace leading off the living room and kitchen, and a large south-facing swimming pool accessed via a large lift or the side path. The pool and surrounding terrace have breathtaking views over the valley, and there is a hydraulic pool lift with a chair or sling option which is much better for those who have balance problems in the upper half of the body. Guests can enjoy comfortable sunbeds (including one with larger wheels and thicker mattress) and a pool-side room with refrigerator.
About Us
Simon and Denise Raines created Ourico do Mar after Simon was paralyzed from the neck down (C4 tetraplegic/quadriplegic) following an accident while playing rugby at the age of 18. Denise worked on the spinal unit where Simon was treated and after getting married the two decided to move to Portugal in 2001. Their goal was to create an idyllic holiday destination where people with a disability including their family & friends could come to relax and enjoy.
After 22 exciting years, Denise & Simon have now handed the torch over to new owners Charlotte and Glen who have fallen in love with Ourico do Mar. Charlotte speaks 5 languages (EN,FR,NL,DE,ESP) and her vast experience as a registered home nurse gives guests the peace of mind and warm welcome they would come to expect at Ourico do Mar.
